Bangladesh beat Pakistan by 10 wickets in the first Test of the ongoing two-match series played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday (August 25). The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side chased down the target of 30 runs in 6.3 overs without losing any wicket to win the first-ever Test match against the Pakistani team in the 14th attempt. The visitors, who managed to take a 117-run lead in the first inning, dismissed the hosts for 146 runs in the second inning during the second session of the fifth day’s play.
For Bangladesh, spin-bowling all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up four wickets for 21 runs in 11.5 overs, and three Pakistani batters were sent back to the pavilion by Shakib Al Hasan, who conceded 44 runs in his quota of 17 overs.
The first-ever Test win over Pakistan not only helped Bangladesh take a 1-0 lead in the series but also rise to joint-number-five position in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table. On the other hand, Pakistan has now dropped to the second-last position after losing all four Test matches played under Shan Masood’s captaincy.
Mehidy, Rahim shine
In the historic win over Pakistan at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, senior batter Mushfiqur Rahim and spin bowling all-rounder Mehidy played a big role. While former captain Rahim top-scored for the visitors by making 191 runs in the first innings, Mehidy scored 77 runs in the first innings and picked up a total of five wickets in the match, four of which came in the second innings.
Apart from them, opening batter Shadman Islam (93), former captain Mominul Haque (50), and wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das (56) also made some significant contributions with the bat in the first innings for Najmul Hossain Shanto & Co.
As for the hosts, except wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, no other batter was able to perform as per expectations. Rizwan, who top-scored for the Shan Masood-led side by remaining unbeaten on 171 runs in the first inning, scored 51 runs from 80 balls in the second inning as well, but his effort was not enough for Pakistan to avoid the defeat.
The second Test between the two teams is also scheduled to take place at the same venue and will start on Friday, August 30.
