In a heartwarming and unique gesture that captured the spirit of local traditions and the love for animals, Bengaluru celebrated Ashtami by felicitating two remarkable buffalos, Dhoni and Bolla, in a grand ceremony held at Banthara Bhavan in Vijayanagar. The event was organized by Tulunadu Jawaner and drew dignitaries and thousands of kambala enthusiasts.
Dhoni and Bolla, the two celebrated buffalos, were dressed in shawls and adorned with garlands, adding a touch of regality to their presence. The owners of these extraordinary animals received a letter of honour, recognizing their exceptional partnership in the world of kambala racing.
These two buffalo athletes have consistently clinched victory in the demanding Kambala races for the past six years. Their prowess and speed were showcased in 2021 when they set a new record by covering a distance of 142 meters in a mere 11.44 seconds. The credit for their impressive feats goes to their dedicated owner, Bollagoduttu Satish Shetty.
A video captured by News18 depicted the touching scene as the crowd surrounded the buffalos, bestowing them with honours while capturing the memorable moments with photographs.
Kambala, a unique form of buffalo racing, is a cherished sport in Karnataka, especially among the farming communities. The racing season typically begins in November and continues until March, attracting enthusiasts and participants from various parts of the state. These races, organized by Kambala Associations, hold deep cultural and traditional significance for many villages.
Traditionally, the winners of kambala races were awarded coconuts and bananas. In contemporary times, silver and gold coins have become the prized rewards. Some communities even present eight-gram gold coins to the victors. The buffalos themselves are adorned with intricate brass and silver headpieces and colourful saddlecloths, creating a spectacle that adds to the festivity.
The races are not just about competition; they are a symbol of gratitude to the animals that play a vital role in the livelihood of the farming communities. Villages like Vandaro and Choradi, Karnataka, consider these races as a form of ritual, expressing their appreciation for the buffalo’s role in their lives and their protection from diseases.
