Timeline: Market ends in a positive note

Mumbai: After two days of a roller coaster at the Indian markets, right messages from the Finance minister and the market regulator meant the sentiment was slightly better. In fact the Sensex closed in the green.

This is how a very volatile Tuesday turned up:

• 9:55 am: The opening bell on Dalal street, a day after the Sensex almost crashed to its lowest levels in 2008, Asia was a sea of red and at the gong the Sensex nosedived more than 400 points.
• 10:20 am: Then came news that the Finance Minister had called a meeting of the top brass from the Chief Economic adviser to SEBI chief –their mission –send out a message that all is well on the Indian stock exchanges.

• 10:30 am: ICICI Bank continued to be at the eye of the storm. Managing Director and CEO, ICICI Bank KV Kamath issued the second statement that all was well with the bank but there was little impact.
• 11:00 am: Another regulator swung into action –The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a statement saying deposits were safe and there was no fear that the bank would run out of money. It worked, the stock recovered 4 per cent and by the end of the day was up more than 8.5 per cent.
• 12:00 pm: At noon Europe began to trade, despite their initial weakness, the Sensex had rebounded almost 130 points.
• 1:30 pm: The government was not done yet . The Finance Minister gave his final balm to frayed investor nerves.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram said, “There was nothing to worry about Indian market. We are suffering the consequences of the turbulence around the world. Basically the Indian market is sound market, attractive market and well regulated market.”

While Tuesday's recovery is definitely not the end of the story, it gave rise to one sentiment that had been missing for a while on Dalal street – hope that the bulls are still there to take on the bears once in a while.
