Suicide over loan harassment: ICICI pays Rs 15 lakh
Prakash Sarvankar had committed suicide following harassment by recovery agents.

Mumbai: ICICI Bank has paid Rs 15 lakh as compensation to the family of a customer, Prakash Sarvankar, who committed suicide a week ago following harassment by recovery agents.

In his suicide note, Sarvankar says he was being repeatedly contacted by agents of ICICI Bank, asking him to repay a personal loan of Rs 50,000. Prakash had taken the loan in January this year, but was unable to pay it back on time.

Police have arrested four people in connection with the case, including the owner of the recovery agency Nishant Nagarney.

The ICICI Bank says the ex-gratia amount has been paid as a goodwill gesture. This is possibly the first of its kind case in which a bank has been forced to award compensation for the misdeeds of its recovery agents.
