Mkt ends: Sensex loses over 135 points
The Sensex closed down over 135 points. Losses were seen in several FMCG, consumer durables, metal, technology, oil, auto, banking, and capital goods stocks.

New Delhi: The market witnessed huge selling pressure and ended in the red.

The Sensex closed down over 135 points and the Nifty closed down nearly 40 points. Losses were seen in several FMCG, consumer durables, metal, technology, oil, auto, banking, and capital goods stocks.

The Sensex closed down 138.15 points or 1.44 per cent at 9445.30. It touched an intraday high of 9600.08 and an intraday low of 9418.63.

The Nifty closed down 39.30 points or 1.35 per cent at 2870.80. It touched an intraday high of 2910.05 and an intraday low of 2866.50.

The CNX Midcap Index closed down 24.40 points or 0.58 per cent at 4213.65. It touched an intraday high of 4245.40 and an intraday low of 4207.55.

The market breadth was negative, about 902 shares advanced, 1549 shares declined, and 57 shares remained unchanged.

HDFC, VSNL, IPCL, Hero Honda, Bharti Tele, Reliance Energy and Dr Reddy’s Labs were the biggest index losers.

Ranbaxy Labs, Gujarat Ambjua Cements and NTPC were the biggest index gainers.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index underperformed the other indices. It closed down 1.76 per cent at 3,223.28 amid losses in Samtel Colour, Su-Raj Diamonds, Whirlpool, Blue Star, Titan and Mirc Electronic.

The BSE FMCG Index closed down 1.50 per cent at 1,644.36 as selling was seen in McDowell, HLL, Colgate, ITC, Shaw Wallace, Tata Tea and Nirma.

Metal stocks including Sesa Goa, Tata Steel, Jindal Stainless, Jindal Saw, Gujarat NRE Coke, Jindal Steel, Sail and Nalco also ended in the red. The BSE Metal Index closed down 1.48 per cent at 6,627.27.

Technology stocks including Satyam, Moser Baer, Infosys, MphasiS BFL, Patni Computer, TCS, HCL Info and Wipro also ended lower. The BSE IT Index closed down 1.41 per cent at 3,722.97.

Oil stocks including MRPL, IOC, Reliance, Kochi Refineries, BPCL, HPCL, ONGC and Chennai Petro also witnessed selling pressure. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed down 1.40 per cent at 4,489.54.

Auto stocks including Apollo Tyres, Amtek Auto, Escorts, Hero Honda, Cummins, Bajaj Auto, Maruti, MICO, and Tata Motors also lost ground. The BSE Auto Index closed down 1.37 per cent at 4,276.48.

The BSE Bankex closed down 1.14 per cent at 5,212.06 due to selling in IOB, Bank of Baroda, UTI Bank, Andhra Bank, Canara Bank, SBI, PNB, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.

Capital goods stocks like Thermax, Alsotm Projects, Larsen, Praj Industries, Gammon India, Siemens, ABB and HEG also finished lower. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed down 0.81 per cent at 5,943.46.
