Infy impact: Sensex closes above 10K
The markets have displayed strength shrugging off the concerns and the momentum was provided by strong numbers declared by IT major Infosys.

Mumbai: From extreme fears, chaos to extreme optimism Mumbai has seen it all in less than 24 hours. When the general conseus was that the markets would see a sell off on the back of Tuesday's serial blast it surprised everbody by closing in the positive terrain making significant gains.

The markets have displayed strength shrugging off the concerns and the momentum was provided by strong numbers declared by IT major Infosys, which were above the street expectations.

The Sensex started the day weak but closed with some hefty gains above the 10,900 level.

The Sensex closed at 10,930.09 up 315.74 points and the Nifty closed at 3195.9 up 79.75 points.

However the BSE Midcap and SmallCap index closed with modest gains.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,283.15, up 24.49 points.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,380.33, up 30.09 points.

About 1214 shares advanced, 1066 shares declined, and 78 shares were unchanged.

All the BSE sectoral indices closed in green and the rally was led by the IT index.

The BSE IT Index was up by 6.3 per cent at 4,036.16 moved up. HCL Tech, Hexaware Tech, Infosys, TCS, Satyam.

The BSE Metal Index advanced by 2.9 per cent at 8,479.54. Hindalco, Jindal Steel, Sterlite Ind and Hind Zinc witnessed buying interest.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index rose 2.8 per cent at 5,407.05. Reliance, GAIL and ONGC advanced higher.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 2.64 per cent at 7,108.00. L&T, Crompton Greave, Praj Industries, Gammon India and ABB closed higher.

The BSE FMCG Index was up 1.9 per cent at 1,977.60. McDowell, Dabur India, HLL. Nirma and Colgate closed in green.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index gained 1.08 per cent at 2,806.68. Titan Industries and Whirlpool were up.

The BSE Auto Index added 0.95 per cent at 4,663.15. Escorts, Maruti Udyog, Bharat Forge, Sundram and M&M closed in positive terrain.

The BSE Health Care Index was up by 0.41 per cent at 3,156.90. Nicholas Pirama, Aventis Pharma, Aurobindo Pharma, Lupin and Sun Pharma were among the major gainers.

The BSE Bankex was up 0.16 per cent at 4,326.79. SBI, Andhra Bank, UTI Bank, Kotak Mahindra and HDFC Bank.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7434.1 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 2,6125.44 crore.

The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3121.5 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 36681.04 crore.
