Mumbai: The mercury levels are rising and rising with it are power cuts. However, there is some respite for the people of Maharashtra this summer.

The controversial Dabhol power project has started re-generating power from Monday.

After remaining idle for nearly five years, the power plant located in Ratnagiri district on Maharashtra coast, sprang to life early Sunday morning when one of the gas turbines of the plant completed the crucial synchronization process and started supplying power to the grid.

Renamed Ratnagiri gas and power private limited, the plant will generate 740 mega watts of electricity in its first phase.

"The project would gain its full capacity within eight to ten days," said Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

"There was no shortage of Naphtha, but after being shut down for a long period, the plant would take some time to run in its full capacity," he added.

Once fully operational, it will have a total generation capacity of over 2,000 mega watts.

The project was shut down in May 2001 following a power tariff dispute between its promoter Enron and its sole customer, the Maharashtra state power utility.

Deshmukh says it's just the right time for Dabhol to start generation as the state is facing a major power crisis.
