In Karnataka, Kannada farmers are currently facing a scarcity of water. In the Talakadu town of Mysore district, they follow a unique tradition of worshipping god for rain. In this, the male farmers don the attire of the women and dance on the main road of the village. They chant old sayings and pray for the rain. The Kannada farmers are unable to grow a suitable number of crops due to less rainfall in the area. The rainy season in India lasts for 4 months and it usually starts in June and ends in September.

Apart from dancing and singing on roads, they also distribute Ragi Ambaliyan from house to house in the village. It is a South Indian recipe which is made from ragi flour and buttermilk. It is one of the nutritious traditional food items in Karnataka. It is believed that Ragi Ambaliyan quenches the hunger of the people which will eventually result in rain. All these traditions are observed by offering worship to Shri Basaveshwara Swami of the village.

The main reason for practising this tradition is to please the Lord Varuna who is also known as the god of sea and ocean as per Vedic literature of India. It is believed that if you distribute millets in the village along with poojas then lord Varuna will calm down.

This year, the deficit rainfall in Karnataka has led to crop losses worth Rs 30,433 crore. It has affected 42 lakh hectares of land till now in the six-month kharif season which began in April. According to the report by the Economic Times, the current drought destroyed agricultural crops in 39.74 lakh hectares and horticultural crops in 1.82 lakh hectares. The state has declared 195 taluks as drought-hit areas during the southwest monsoon.
