Several lots of hand sanitiser and aloe gels, being sold in the US, have been voluntarily recalled due to the presence of methanol, which can be toxic when applied to the skin or ingested.

The US drug regulator announced that 40 lots of Aruba Aloe Hand Sanitiser Gel Alcohol 80% and Aruba Aloe Alcoholada Gel were recalled because they contain “alcohol denatured with methanol.”

The recalled products, sold online in the US, were distributed between May 1, 2021 and Oct. 27, 2023. The company in question said that all customers who bought these products were notified via email and offered a discount coupon for their next purchase.

“April 5th, 2024 – Oranjestad, Aruba, Aruba Aloe Balm N.V. is voluntarily recalling 40 lots of Aruba Aloe Hand Sanitiser Gel Alcohol 80% and Aruba Aloe Alcoholada Gel to the consumer level. The products have been found to contain alcohol denatured with methanol,” the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a press release on April 5.

“Risk Statement: Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache blurred vision, coma, seizures, permanent blindness, permanent damage to the central nervous system, or death. Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk, young children who accidently ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute are most at risk for methanol poisoning,” it added.

According to FDA, Aruba Aloe Hand Sanitiser Gel is used as a sanitiser to diminish bacteria that may lead to illness. It is presented in 355 mL dark green plastic bottles, featuring a white label with the inscription “ARUBA ALOE Hand Sanitizer GEL 80% Alcohol Made in Aruba World’s Finest Aloe,” and a barcode of 0 82252 03300 5.

The Aruba gel provides temporary relief from pain and itching associated with minor burns, sunburn, insect bites, or minor skin irritations, the US regulator said. It is available in two sizes: 65 mL and 251 mL plastic bottles, each marked with a barcode (0 82252 34030 1 and 0 82252 03120 9, respectively). The bottles are transparent, with labels displaying “Alcoholada Gel Pain Relieving Gel 0.5% Lidocaine Hydrochloride.”
