The Canadian government announced that it is still awaiting the results of law enforcement investigations into the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar. A report by the Hindustan Times citing officials said that any link to India remains an unverified allegation based on intelligence.
In May of this year, the Canadian Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced the arrests of four Indian nationals in connection with the murder investigation.
The individuals are facing charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, with their trial expected to resume in mid-November.
A official involved with the investigation told the newspaper that they are optimistic that their interrogation would yield evidence of the alleged Indian involvement, supported by documents gathered from domestic agencies and a Five Eyes partner, which is likely the United States.
A senior RCMP official last week said that Canadian law enforcement is pursuing “separate” investigations into alleged foreign interference by India. These investigations are considered “distinct” from the inquiry into the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the official further added.
This statement was made by RCMP Deputy Commissioner Mark Flynn during his appearance before the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions on Thursday. He noted, “We have ongoing separate and distinct investigations,” which include “investigating the Government of India.”
