Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day visit to UAE, on Monday visited the city of Masdar, which is a planned city project in Abu Dhabi. The unique city, built over an area of six square kilometre, relies on solar energy and other renewable energy sources.
The website of the UAE city terms it as "a pedestrian-friendly community where academics and business professionals live, work, play and learn in an environment that pushes the boundaries of sustainable design, construction and operation".
The city, reportedly designed by British architectural firm Foster and Partners, flaunts of urban as well as traditional designs. The other major highlight of the city is a battery-operated driver less car, which the Prime Minister travelled on during his visit to the city on Monday.
According to the information available on the official website of the city: "The cars are controlled by computer and use sensors to ensure nothing is in their path and to locate magnets that have been embedded in the concrete floor every two metres to help the vehicles navigate. An overhead leaky coaxial cable antennae runs the length of the PRT corridors and provides a wireless link between the individual cars and the PRT system computer."
A visit through the Masdar City takes approximately 60-90 minutes, including the driverless vehicle experience in the personal rapid transit system and a walk through the city.
As you walk through Masdar City, you will notice its progressive urban planning and eye-catching architecture that combines traditional design principles with leading-edge technology.
