An engineer took to the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) to recount a “funny story” of meeting a high-earning software developer who prefers to travel via trains rather than flights. In his post, he shared why the techie with a package of more than Rs 30 lakh a year chooses to travel by train instead of taking the air route.
“Today, I was travelling by train and met a guy who works as a software developer at a big company, earning over 30 lakhs a year. I asked him, ‘With that kind of money, why aren’t you flying instead of taking the train?’” wrote Chirag Deshmukh on X.
The techie shared that after completing his education, he struggled to find a job. One day, while travelling on a train he met a stranger who helped him get his first job through referral. From that moment on, he chose to travel by train instead of flying, except in emergencies.
The engineer added, “He smiled and said: After college, I had no job and was struggling. One day, while travelling by train, I met a person whose elder brother helped me get a referral that landed me my first job. Since then, I decided to always travel by train—unless it’s an emergency.”
Here’s what the X user posted about his encounter with the software developer:

The not-so-funny story shared by the engineer on the social media platform prompted many to share their own encounters with strangers and how they changed their lives.
“Absolutely. Many conversations happen during that time, especially on longer journeys. I remember having a conversation with a tech lead who explained to me the importance of cloud technologies way back in 2015. It got me hooked on the world of AWS,” expressed an individual.
Another added, “My cousin owns a company with a turnover of > 10 crores and is also a Chairman in another organization yet he prefers to travel by train. Somehow we have a connection with trains.”
“A 1 hour flight can’t give you, what a 20 hour journey can give,” wrote a third.
A fourth commented, “I can relate, my first internship offer was through a guy later who became family, sat next to me in Ahmedabad Rajdhani from AMD.”
“That can’t be a legit reason but to each her/his own,” wrote yet another X user, raising doubts over the authenticity of the story.
Another, who didn’t believe the story, wrote, “Seems a tall tale!”
