Slavery was one of the sins committed by the royals during the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The prison rooms for the slaves in Zanzibar in Tanzania were created for the slaves. In the 1800s, black slaves were kept captive by Omani Arabs in such basements. They were sold in the market after being tortured in these cells. Recently, a content creator visited these basements to display the pathetic condition of such buildings which were used to torture the black slaves. The windows were made thin to prevent escape. The slaves were made to sleep amid their faeces and toilets. The cellmates who survived were later sold in the market. The video has gone viral.
The content creator Architect Russell shared a video on his Instagram, showcasing the architecture of the Zanzibar prison in Tanzania. While filming the video, the man claimed that the slaves were beaten in the basement till their bodies started bleeding. They were tied to chains for the whole day to prevent their escape. They used to sleep and live in the same basement.
Sleeping around the toilets and faeces, many slaves developed life-threatening infections. The ones who survived such diseases were sold in the market. The bodies of the deceased slaves were kept inside the basement. The content creator claimed that around 70 children and women were kept in the basement. Slaves were bound to drink infected water. Architect Russell was shocked to know about the atrocities black men had to face during the 1800s.
“A space so small yet filled with so much pain and suffering. This is the true story of the slaves imprisoned by Omani Arabs in Stonetown, Zanzibar in the 1800s.” wrote Architect Russell.
Along with the content creator, the netizens also expressed their astonishment after hearing of the torture faced by black slaves. While Architect Russell talked about the existence of such a basement, many netizens pointed out the happiness on his face while narrating the incident.
“He looked way too happy talking about that,” wrote one of the users.
