Meta Boss Mark Zuckerberg's 'Aut Zuck Aut Nihil' T-Shirt at California Event Explained
Mark Zuckerberg, on his 40th birthday, wore a T-shirt with the words “Carthago delenda est,” meaning “Carthage must be destroyed,” referring to the historical rival of Rome.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wore plain grey T-shirts and hoodies to work every day for several years to be more productive. So, when he opted for T-shirts in different colors and with bold phrases, it certainly turned heads and sparked chatter on the Internet. At the company’s annual Connect event in Menlo Park, California, the tech titan wore a black T-shirt with a Latin phrase. While the event was to showcase Meta’s latest innovations, including the advanced AR glasses – Orion and the Meta Quest 3S, it was Zuckerberg’s T-shirt that truly stole the limelight.

What is the meaning of the Roman Empire-inspired phrase?

“Aut Zuck Aut Nihil,” was written in all caps in grey on Zuckerberg’s black T-shirt. But, what does it mean? The Latin phrase translates to “All Zuck, or all nothing” – a play on the famous phrase “Aut Caesar, aut nihil,” which means “either a Caesar or nothing,” or more simply, “all or nothing”.

This, however, is not the first time that Zuckerberg wore a T-shirt with a Latin phrase. On his 40th birthday, Zuckerberg posted photos on social media in which he wore a T-shirt with the words “Carthago delenda est,” meaning “Carthage must be destroyed”. This is a famous quote from the Roman statesman Cato the Younger, who used it to advocate for the complete annihilation of the city of Carthage, a historical rival of Rome.
