Tomas Machac and Katerina Siniakova, who broke up ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, triumphed in the tennis mixed doubles event to secure a gold medal for the Czech Republic. The two reportedly were in a relationship for four years. Despite the split, the duo decided to compete together at the Games. They put up a dominant performance throughout the campaign before defeating China’s Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen in the final. Machac and Siniakova registered a commanding 6-2 win in the first set before losing the second set 5-7. The Czech pair was first to accumulate 10 points in the tie-breaker that ensured the gold medal.
Following their victory at the Roland Garros, Tomas Machac and Katerina Siniakova were asked about the current status of their relationship. The tennis stars, however, refused to make any comment about the topic.
“That’s our personal life, so you don’t need to know that. We like it when you are confused,” Katerina told the Associated Press (AP).
Echoing the same sentiment, Machac said, “This is top secret. In red letters, top secret.”
It was the second Olympic gold for Katerina Siniakova, who is recognised as a doubles specialist. She paired up with Barbora Krejcikova to win the gold medal in the women’s doubles event at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Siniakova also has nine Grand Slam titles in the doubles category and has shared seven of them with Krejcikova.
Katerina Siniakova joined American star Coco Gauff to secure the French Open title earlier in June this year. In the following month, Siniakova emerged victorious at Wimbledon along with Taylor Townsend. “I showed myself that I can play well with anyone and I should be more proud of myself,” the 28-year-old said after her victory in Paris.
One of their opponents Zhang Zhizhen previously competed with Tomas Machac in men’s doubles at Grand Slam events. They also share a good bond outside of the field. They reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January before featuring in the quarter-finals at the French Open. After bagging the silver medal, Zhang quipped, “Friendship’s totally broken. He (Machac) destroyed my Olympic Games.”
Meanwhile, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands to win the mixed doubles bronze at the Paris Olympics.
