A tragedy unfolded in the Chinese social media circle as an influencer died right in the middle of a livestream due to overeating. The 24-year-old woman from China used to livestream while eating and had a huge following.
Pan Xiaoting was a Mukbang live streamer, which means she entertained audiences by eating various types of food on camera. Initially, she worked as a waitress and started streaming as a side hustle to earn some extra income. However, as her popularity began to rise, she decided to leave her job and focus on streaming full-time. This decision marked a significant shift in her career.
As she gained more followers, the demands of her new profession grew. Her family began to worry about the potential impact on her health due to the large quantities of food she consumed during her streams. However, she refused to listen to her family’s concerns and instead, Xiaoting decided to rent a separate studio for her streaming sessions, ensuring a more professional and controlled environment. Her dedication to Mukbang streaming paid off, as she received not only a substantial income but also numerous gifts from her fans.
As Pan Xiaoting’s career progressed, she pushed herself to extreme limits. Her profession led to multiple hospitalisations. At the time of her death, she weighed 300 kg (approximately 660 pounds). She was hospitalised due to gastric bleeding, and after being discharged, she began undertaking even more hazardous challenges. She consumed up to 10 kg of food in a single session and would eat continuously for up to 10 hours a day.
On July 14, she died during one such session. Although the official cause of death was not disclosed, the Chinese website Sohu reported that her stomach was filled with undigested food, and the lower part was deformed. Xiaoting’s death has triggered health concerns on social media. A few also question the need to perform such challenges.
