'System Should Enable Dreams Not Crush Them', Says Somdev Devvarman After Moving Court Against AITA

Former Indian tennis star Somdev Devvarman took the All Indian Tennis Association to court over the association’s failure to provide any seats for athletes in its central council or general assembly, thereby flouting the sports code.

The 39-year-old reflected on the state of the system and called for the tennis fraternity to build a better future for the young kids taking to the sport with a passionate post on his social media account.

“Accountability and Transparency are essential for Indian tennis to rise from the unprecedented low it has currently fallen to,” Devvarman’s post began.

“The conduct of the federation is in direct conflict with the law of the land: it does not follow the sports code, it flouts the judgements of courts and its administrators choose to ignore the most basic guidelines for sports governance while fighting over the spoils that the players have achieved,” he continued.

“We Succeeded as professionals despite a broken system, A system that was corrupt, insensitive and incompetent. But does every little boy and girl out there who picks up a racquet and dares to dream have to fight the same system?”

“The system should enable dreams not crush them,” he asserted.

“We owe it to the sport that has given us all that we have to make a difference. We owe it to the future, we owe it to India.”

Devvarman also thanked the legal team that helped him move court against the AITA.

“Massive thanks to our legal team who agreed to represent us. Rahul Mehra, Arunadhri Iyer, Jhanvi Dubey and the rest of the advocates who worked tirelessly to present our case in the best possible manner,” he wrote.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Indian tennis community for extending their support to him.

“And finally, our most sincere gratitude to the Indian Tennis community of players, coaches, parents, juniors and well-wishers who have reached out to us with relentless support and optimism,” Devvarman added.
