Your Next Windows PC Might Not Have The Start Button: What It Means
Windows users have been relying on the start button for varied applications but Microsoft wants to give it an AI twist.

Microsoft is building the start button in a new avatar for Windows PCs and it will be called Copilot. Well, that’s what Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella has said talking about the rumoured Windows 12 version which is expected to launch in the near future.

The Start button on Windows has been a permanent fixture but with the company’s renewed focus on AI well documented, it might be looking at an AI overhaul of the button, which Nadella suggested during a recent event.

Nadella even pointed out that Copilot can be the orchestrator for all the apps and allow people to navigate through the PC for different applications. While he doesn’t directly confirm removing the start button on Windows 12, his statement shows how AI has taken the centrestage for Nadella and Co.

Their ambitions are aided by growing emphasis on AI-laden hardware with the likes of Qualcomm and Intel giving them the armoury to advance in this segment.

Replacing the start button won’t be easy and some might say that in the ideal world, both Copilot and the button can co-exist, allowing users to decide how they want to use their Windows PC. Microsoft feels that AI can be the pathway to further innovation in the PC industry, made possible with the introduction of next-gen AI PCs.

This is similar to Google or other companies offering a shortcut to activate Google Assistant but give users the choice and freedom to use or ignore them on their device. Nobody can say how the AI PC market will mature and it remains to be seen if the ideal harmony between the hardware and software could give AI the perfect chance to shine and make lives easier for people.

Microsoft does have the upperhand with its association with OpenAI but it also needs the likes of Intel and Qualcomm to give them the right platform to get the best out of these AI applications like Copilot, which, as it seems, could replace the start button in the future, which could be as early as next year, when the AI PCs hit the market.
