With Xiaomi unveiling its latest device, Redmi Y2 smartphone that is loaded with artificial intelligence (AI) powered features, the market is abuzz with the countless possibilities that AI can open for smartphones. As manufacturers slowly jump on board the AI bandwagon, we list out the top AI features that smartphone companies are vying to integrate.

AI equipped cameras

Smartphones with AI integrated cameras can ensure faster detection of subjects and also adjust the settings based on the lighting and other conditions. AI features in a smartphone’s camera allow images to be captured with sharper detail, enhancing the quality of the portraits. Take for instance Xiaomi’s The Redmi Y2 that comes with a 16-megapixel sensor on the front with AI packed features such as AI Portrait Mode and AI Smart Beauty. Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL also have the Pixel Visual Core co-processor for AI processing that allows enhanced image quality. The Pixel 2 also uses a technology called RAISAR which has AI features in its phones, permitting digital zoom.

Improved voice assistants

The AI feature helps improve the quality and responsiveness of voice assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant and Cortana. After Siri’s success, Samsung too ventured into the AI domain and introduced its own personal assistant software called Bixby. In October 2017, Samsung launched Bixby 2.0 which identifies patterns in the user’s behaviour through AI to identify items you would be interested in viewing from a panel on the home screen. Meanwhile, the improved voice assistant on Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL allows users to hear their voice from their Pixel device and project it onto their Google home devices.

With the help of AI backed features, these assistants now go beyond replying to questions and are able to follow simple instructions.

Tighter security

Thanks to increased AI integration smartphones now come with more sophisticated face recognition features. The Apple iPhone X uses an AI built algorithm for its Face ID device unlocking system. The AI enabled processing can eventually detect certain major changes in user’s appearance. Meanwhile, Huawei’s Honor View 10 also has its own NPU that provides an advanced and secure face unlock option.
