New Delhi: With iOS 9, Apple promised brand new features, improved interface, and also pumped up security. It was further reported to be the fastest ever adopted iOS in Apple’s history.
However, the Apple software that powered over 50 per cent of iDevices in a week of launch has a major security loophole that puts users’ photos and contacts to easy access without even the need of a passcode or PIN.
The easily exploitable security bug concerns the PIN system on an iPhone running iOS 9. YouTube user “videosdebarraquito" explained the hack in his video. All that one needs to do is enter an incorrect PIN four times and on the fifth attempt, enter just three numbers and then hold down the home button to bring up Siri as you enter the fourth number.
Once you type in the number and instruct Siri to run the clock app, there’s a way you can trespass the need for password for the contacts or photos, all while the phone is originally locked.
The video has been published with the intention of drawing Apple’s attention to the security flaw. Before Apple acknowledges or issues a patch, here is how you can stop the loophole from putting your personal data at risk.
Open the Settings app and tap ‘Touch ID & Passcode’ and scroll down to the ‘Allow access when locked’ and toggle to disable the voice-assistant. This is a simple way to avoid the potential hack with Siri automatically enabled in iOS 9.
