Director Nag Ashwin opened up about Kalki 2989 AD. The film stars Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone and Disha Patani, and is one of the highly-anticipated films of 2024. Speaking an event recently, Nag Ashwin shared details about the film’s title and shared interesting details about the film’s making. The filmmaker revealed that while he cannot reveal the real meaning of the film’s title, Kalki 2989 AD has a ‘powerful’ meaning behind it.
The filmmaker attended the India’s Mytho-Sci-fi Epic at IIT Bombay and opened up about the film. Addressing the 2898 AD in the title, Nag Ashwin said, “There is one logic to it which I will reveal closer to the film’s release date. But there is a logic, I don’t know how true or accurate it is.” When another person asked about Kalki in the title, the director said, “It’s a very powerful name and it is something which is connected to present and past, and that’s what the story (of the film) is.” Conincidentally, Kalki is also the tenth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Speaking about the making, Ashwin said that he has been making the film for four to five years now. While making, Ashwin felt he is doing “engineering, not filmmaking” because everythingm from props, costumes to sets were built “from scratch.”
“In India, we do not have a lot of sci-fi films. We have done a few time travel films. This one is different because it’s in a whole separate world on its own. Also, in the international sense, it is new because we have not seen India in a future setting or dystopian setting. So now we don’t have to look at London and New York being born, now we can see our cities also,” Aswin said.
“This movie took place in the cusp between before and after Midjourney and before and after Chat GPT. First two years, we did a lot of work and then we realised a lot of work became easier after this text-to-image and image-to-text generator happened,” he added.
Meanwhile, Kalki 2989 AD is yet to announce a new release date. In a conversation with News18 Showsha earlier this year, Nag Ashwin said that they would come up with a date soon and inform fans.
