In a major setback to the NC, the party chief Farooq Abdullah is trailing behind PDP's Tariq Hameed Karra in the Srinagar seat.

New Delhi: The Congress and its ally National Conference is heading towards its worst ever performance in Jammu and Kashmir. The National Conference which has won three seats in the last general elections has been unable to retain even a single seat.

In a major setback to the NC, the party chief Farooq Abdullah is defeated by PDP's Tariq Hameed Karra in the Srinagar seat by 42,280 votes.

Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party is leading in three seats unlike 2009 elections where it was unable to open its account. Mufti defeated NC's Mirza Mehboob Beg in the Anantnag seat by 65,417 votes.

Following the NC is the Congress which, too, couldn't open its account in the state. Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was contesting from his home constituency Udhampur, is defeated by BJP's Dr Jitendra Singh by 60,976 votes.

Riding on the Modi wave, the BJP wins two seats in the state. In the Jammu seat, BJP's Jugal Kishore defeats Congress's Madan Lal Sharma by 2,57,280 votes.

In Ladakh, BJP's Thupstan Chhewang defeated Independent candidate Ghulam Raza by just 36 votes.

The Lok Sabha election result will also have a bearing on the state Assembly elections as they are due in December. In last elections, the NC-congress coalition had bagged 5 out of 6 seats.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he's still trying to come up with the terms with the poll result. He says, "This is not the press conference I expected to be giving today while I knew that there is a difficult challenge. I did not expect this one-sided result in the state today. I did not expect this verdict, but there are important lessons to be learnt."

Big winners:

Mehbooba Mufti

Jugal Kishore

Big losers:

Farooq Abdullah

Ghulam Nabi Azad
