WB Panchayat polls: EC moves court against Mamata govt
The Mamata Banerjee government had called for a two-phase election to be held on April 26 and 30.

Kolkata: The West Bengal State Election Commission has moved the Calcutta High Court on Monday appealing for quashing of the state Panchayat Election notification. The Mamata Banerjee government had called for a two-phase election to be held on April 26 and 30.

The Commission's counsel LC Bihani brought the matter before the court of Justice Biswanatah Somadder and prayed for the rejection. The judge, however, directed the counsel to get the matter listed before he could take it up. It is likely to be considered by the court, following listing, either on Tuesday or any day after that.

The EC wants it to be changed to a three-phase election, as recommended earlier, and also wants deployment of central security forces. The Congress too claims the government's 2-phase plan will manipulate votes.
