UP: 18 lakh govt employees on strike over quota bill

Lucknow: As many as 18 lakh government employees and officers in Uttar Pradesh went on a flash strike with immediate effect on Thursday against the introduction of quota bill in the Rajya Sabha. However, emergency services were exempted from the strike by the government officials and employees.

This came even as the Samajwadi Party on Thursday staged a walkout in the Rajya Sabha over the introduction of the bill while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) pushed for the passage of the bill.

Speaking about the issue outside Parliament, Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav said that party would continue to protest as it wanted the bill to withdrawn. He alleged that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was working under the pressure of the BSP.

Meanwhile, addressing the Rajya Sabha, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati said that data showed that people from the SC and ST communities were in need of reservation for promotion in government jobs. She further said that the BSP was not opposed to quota for those from the backward classes as well.
