Third Front gaining strength as BJD pulls out of NDA
Naveen Patnaik-led BJD on Monday formally pulled out of the NDA.

New Delhi: The efforts to form a non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a non-Congress alternative at the Centre is picking up with both the major national parties facing a tough time is getting more allies.

In Orissa the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal on Monday formally pulled out of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after breaking its alliance with the BJP on Saturday.

The BJD government is all set to prove majority in the Orissa Assembly on Wednesday with support from the new found friends in Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

Patnaik's exit is also being used by the remaining NDA allies like Janata Dal (United) in Bihar to squeeze BJP further in seat sharing talks.

With the first date for voting just a little over a month away, here is a look at how the three main players in the election fray stand in terms of alliances

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA): Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Lok Jan Shakti Party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, NCP, Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK), Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), National Conference, Sikkim Democratic Front and Muslim League,

There is still a big question mark on Samajwadi Party joining the UPA.

The NDA: BJP, Shiv Sena, JD (U), Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

Here, too, it is still not clear if the Trinamool Congress will stay with the NDA or move to the UPA.

Third Front: CPI, CPI-M, Forward Bloc, Republican Party of India (RPI), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telengana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Janata Dal (Secular).
