Chennai: Indications of the beginning of a rift between the Congress and the DMK emerged after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi skipped an appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday evening.
The meeting was scheduled at the Governor's residence but Karunanidhi chose to attend another event to honour a poet instead.
This would have been the first one-on-one between the two leaders after former telecom minister A Raja's resignation over the 2G scam.
Earlier that day, the DMK chief was conspicuous by his absence when the PM arrived in Chennai, as his entire cabinet had gone to the airport to receive the PM.
Manmohan Singh is in Chennai to inaugurate the National Science Congress. The fact that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's name is missing from the list of invitees has only increased speculation that all is not well between two parties.
"When I was called here, I had another important thing to do - to receive the Prime Minister at the airport - that was the duty of a chief minister. But I didn't go there and came here instead. What does that mean? I consider coming here as a service to the Tamils," said Karunanidhi.
