Meanwhile, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the BJP veteran had not praised any individual but the style of functioning of party chief ministers.

New Delhi: Days after LK Advani appeared to have preferred Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over Narendra Modi in the race for BJP's prime ministerial candidate, party president Rajnath Singh on Monday said the veteran leader's statement was misinterpreted.

He was asked whether Advani had pitched Chouhan against Modi by lavishing praise on the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister. The BJP chief once again backed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, calling him the most popular leader of the country.

"Advani's statement has been misinterpreted. There is no doubt that Modi is a popular leader in India. All our Chief Ministers have done a good job in dealing with socio-economic conditions in states," Rajnath said.

Meanwhile, true to his reputation for humility, Chouhan himself described Modi as his "senior and elder brother" and sought to rule himself out of race for being projected as BJP's prime ministerial face. Chouhan said the BJP veteran had not praised any individual but the style of functioning of party chief ministers.
