Amethi (Uttar Pradesh): Congress star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi on Monday said she was “pained” that poverty still prevails in Amethi despite efforts by her family to provide basic amenities to the people.
Addressing an election rally in Amethi, from where her brother Rahul Gandhi is seeking re-election, Priyanka said her brother “has tried to do his best in providing basic amenities for the area like electricity, water and roads”.
“Yet I feel pained to see that poverty still prevails in many areas of the constituency. I will ask Rahul to ensure speedy implementation of development work here.
“Our family has been working for you since 1984, when my father Rajiv was an MP from here, and, therefore, we are duty bound to serve you and improve your conditions,” she added.
Priyanka said that the UPA Government has started many programmes like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, which have been formulated specially for the benefit of rural poor.
