New Delhi: BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Sunday demanded an apology to the nation from Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the jailing of its three "innocent" whistle-blower MPs in the 2008 cash-for-vote scam.
Addressing a big rally at the Ramlina grounds to mark the culmination of BJP leader LK Advani's 38-day Jan Chetna Yatra against corruption, Gadkari said it had now been confirmed that the party's three former MPs were "innocent" and were "wrongly sent to jail".
Blaming UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the action, the BJP chief said, "If you have a big heart, you should tender an apology to the nation."
"Our MPs were innocent whistle blowers, but the corrupt Congress government put them in jail,"he said referring to the remarks made by the court while granting bail to the three BJP leaders in the cash-for-vote scam.
Gadkari sought to know what right the Congress leadership and UPA government have to speak against corruption when no action was initiated against the corrupt within the party, as he took the names of Home Minister P Chidambaram and Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit.
Charging the government with inaction on the issue of black money, the BJP chief asked the government on why it was "feeling shy" in disclosing the names of those who possessed illegal money stashed abroad.
