New Delhi: A day after the Supreme Court came down hard on the Centre's inaction over black money stacked in Swiss banks - calling it a mind-boggling theft of national wealth - the prime minister and his cabinet were forced to take up the matter.
Sources have told CNN-IBN that black money issue was discussed in Thursday's cabinet meeting.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself raised the issue and said that the SC observation is making headlines.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will hold a detailed press briefing on the government's strategy on black money.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday criticised the Central Government over its reluctance to disclose the names of people who have stashed black money in these banks.
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by senior advocate Ram Jethmalani on the issue, the bench of justice S Reddy and SS Nijjhar said, "It is a pure and simple theft of the national money. We are talking about mind-boggling crime. We are not on the niceties of various treaties,"
The court also said, "It is not mere tax evasion issue. The problem is the money invested in markets by promissory notes, whether the money is put by spies, terrorists or others that is what we are worried about."
The court also asked the Centre if the 26 names is all the information that the government has on people having black money in foreign banks.
