Lucknow: Former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav has said that his father and Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav will contest from his traditional parliamentary seat of Mainpuri during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Akhilesh, meanwhile, is hoping to stand from Kannauj, his wife Dimple’s current constituency.
“I want to contest from Kannauj, but the decision will be taken by the party. However, Neta Ji (Mulayam Singh Yadav) will contest from Mainpuri,” said Akhilesh, while attending a programme held at Janeshwar Mishra Park in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow.
Mulayam is currently a Member of Parliament from Azamgarh. He had decided to contest from the seat as a part of strategy, but it instead left the party weak on its home turf.
The party has faced defeat in traditional strongholds like Kannauj, Mainpuri, Firozabad and other districts during last year’s state assembly and municipal elections.
Akhilesh’s wife Dimple is the sitting MP from Kannauj but the party president had said that she will not be standing in the Lok Sabha elections.
Earlier, Akhilesh had lashed out at the current Yogi Adityanath-led government over SP leader Azam Khan being presented before a SIT and said, “This government is harassing people in the name of scams. First, they claimed there was an Expressway scam, then they claimed the river scam and now they are trying to harass SP leaders in the name of the Jal Corporation recruitment scandal.”
