Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh government has started the Aastha and Mamta scheme with a lot of fanfare claiming that it will ensure free treatment of several diseases. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that that aim to provide treatment for all the residents of the state through the Aastha and Mamta scheme. But even Chauhan's constituency Budni lacks basic medical facilities to ensure proper healthcare.
Budni is situated just 60 km from Bhopal and the 30-bed community health center is in a very bad state. While the state government claims that medicine is distributed free of cost, an investigation revealed that several of them had already expired. One such expired medicine was ARZ. While the wrapper mentioned manufacturing date as February 2011, the expiry date was January 2013 but the medicine was still being distributed at the health centre.
While the opposition party targeted the government, but state Health Minister Narottam Mishra denied that expired medicines were being distributed.
Congress leader Ajay Singh said that the distribution of expired medicines in the Chief Minister's constituency raise a lot of questions on the functioning of the health department He demanded an investigation into sale of expired medicines and action against the supplier. But Mishra disagreed, claiming that the free distribution of medicines started just before six months ago and so the medicines cannot be past their expiry date. The Health Minister also sought the video footage of expired medicines as proof.
Even the X-ray machine has not been working at the Budni community health centre for the last two years. The centre receives many accident victims as it is near National Highway 69. Dr Rajnish Kumar said patients are transferred to other hospitals in Hoshangabad as X-ray machine in not functioning.
