New Delhi: Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said the protests at Delhi's prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University are being supported by Lashkar-e-Toiba chief Hafiz Saeed. There have been protests at the varsity following the arrest of JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar in a sedition case over allegedly organising event protesting hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
During a press conference, Singh said, "JNU ki jo ghatana hui hai, usse LeT ke chief Hafiz Saeed ka bhi samarthan prapat hai. Desh ko iss haqeqat ko bhi samajhna chahiye kyuki usne samarthan kiya hai. Yeh bhi bhot he durbhagya puran hai. (The incident at JNU are being supported by LeT chief Hafiz Saeed. The nation should understand that these protests are being supported by him (Hafiz Saeed). This is unfortunate.)"
Singh also slammed leaders for politicising the issue. "I appeal all political parties that whenever such situation arises where anti-India slogans are raised, entire nation must speak in one voice," said Singh.
On Saturday, several Congress and Left leaders visited the JNU campus to show solidarity with the students protesting againt Kanhaiya Kumar's arrest. In a hard-hitting attack on the Narendra Modi government over JNU student's arrest, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi virtually drew parallel of it with the regime of Hitler, accusing NDA of "suppressing" students' voice and telling students "don't let those bullies push you around".
Rahul, who visited the JNU campus along with Delhi PCC chief Ajay Maken and former Union Minister Anand Sharma to express solidarity with students agitating against the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar in a sedition case, was shown black flag by members BJP's student wing ABVP.
Going hammer and tongs against the government, Rahul said, "People who suppress voice of this institute are anti-national. They are trying to crush the voice of the youth. I was in Hyderabad a few days back and these same people or their leaders said that Rohith Vemula was an anti-national."
Rahul's visit to JNU today came a day after Kanhaiya Kumar's arrest in a sedition
case over an event at the varsity campus against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, sparking massive outrage among students and criticism from non-BJP parties which dubbed it as an "emergency-like" situation.
