New Delhi: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Thursday demanded stricter action against BJP leader Dayashankar Singh as protests raged over his abusive comments against her.
Mayawati said people from weaker section, especially Dalits, were angry because they regarded her as not just their 'behenji'( sister) but as their 'devi'(Goddess).
"If someone abuses your devi or devta, you would feel very bad. I have not asked my party members in the country to come out on the streets," Mayawati said in the Rajya Sabha.
Launching a scathing attack against the Modi government, Mayawati said, "Even after 69 years of independence, members of Dalit community haven't got half of the socio-economic benefits. No government has been able to stop the atrocities on Dalits."
This Una incident case should run in a fast track court, and also we demand that one of the judge should be a Dalit, [name]Mayawati[/name]
Hundreds of BSP workers took to the streets in Lucknow demanding the immediate arrest of Dayashankar Singh.
Leading the protest at the busy Hazratganj crossing, leader of opposition in the Legislative Council, Naseemuddin Siddiqui said the administration is being given 36 hours to arrest Singh.
The party workers held the protest for about five hours beginning 8 AM. Siddiqui ended the protest around noon after giving the ultimatum to the District Magistrate that Singh be arrested quickly.
Singh had sparked an outrage by his derogatory comments against the BSP supremo. "Mayawati is breaking the dream of Kanshi Ram into pieces. Mayawati is selling tickets like a prostitute."
