‘House’s Good Luck’: PM Modi Congratulates Om Birla On Winning Lok Sabha Speaker Poll
BJP's Om Birla won the Lok Sabha Speaker election through voice votes on Wednesday.

NDA’s pick Om Birla was elected as the Lok Sabha speaker for the second time on Wednesday after a motion moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was adopted through voice votes.

Pro-tem Speaker B Mahtab made the announcement after the Opposition, which had proposed Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh as its candidate, did not press for votes to the motion.

“I announce Om Birla elected as the speaker,” Mahtab said.

Soon after, Modi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju went to Birla’s seat in the front row of the treasury benches to escort him to the chair.

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also joined them. Rahul Gandhi greeted Birla and shook hands with the prime minister.

After that, Modi, Rahul Gandhi and Rijiju escorted Birla to the chair where Mahtab welcomed him saying, “It is your chair, please occupy.”

WHAT PM MODI SAID

“Respected Speaker, it is the good fortune of the House that you are occupying this Chair for the second time. I congratulate you and the entire House,” Narendra Modi said.

The Prime Minister also appreciated Birla for his demeanour and said his smile keeps the parliamentarians smiling.

“I am very confident that the country will be proud of the achievements of the 17th Lok Sabha. The works that didn’t happen during 70 years of independence, were made possible by this House under your chairmanship,” he said.

The Prime Minister also shared a fact that Om Birla is the second parliamentarian to have been nominated to the Speaker post of the Lower House after Balram Jakhar, who was also elected as the Lok Sabha speaker twice.

Jakhar’s tenure lasted for 9 years and 329 days.

“Several milestones come in the long journey of democracy. A few occasions are such when we receive the opportunity to establish milestones,” PM Modi said, while also pointing out Birla’s accomplishments as a member of the parliament in his constituency.

He said that in his constituency, Kota, he worked towards poverty alleviation and working towards women and child development.
