New Delhi: Twitter was split in the middle in its reaction to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's speech on Monday at the annual general meeting of FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) on the status of women in India.
Soon after Modi began his speech addressing the women present at the venue as his 'beheno' (sisters), the two hash tags, diametrically divided in their praise and mockery of the leader, started trending on Twitter.
Modi was speaking about how the plight of women has become worse than in the
18th century despite progress made by society in other areas.
"In our culture, mothers have the highest place. But a lot of bad things have crept into our society. In the 18th century female foeticide had started," he said.
Modi said that after independence it seemed that the country would move towards a modern India. It seemed "we will show the world what is a woman's place. But it seems that as we progressed, our society has degenerated".
We've pulled in some of the tweets from both the hash tags. (With quotes from IANS)
