As farmers continue to agitate against Centre’s three new agricultural laws at Delhi border, the Congress is organising Kisan Mahapanchayats these days and openly supporting the farmers. In the mahapanchayat, held in Meerut on Sunday, Congress General Secretary and UP in-charge Priyanka Gandhi attacked the central BJP government over the issue. She further said that no matter how many years it takes to withdraw the agricultural law, the Congress will stand with the farmers. Gandhi reached the venue on a tractor along with UP Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu and other senior party leaders.
Addressing a huge gathering in Meerut, she said, “These three laws…are they made for your good (farmers) or for the good of PM Modi’s billionaire friends? Today, the protest has completed 100 days, millions of farmers are sitting at the Delhi borders. If this law is made for you, then why are millions of you sitting at the border? Prime Minister Modi cannot go to the Delhi border because he does not respect the farmers, because his government is not for the farmers, it is not for the countrymen. His government is running for the industrialists and his big billionaire friends.”
Attacking the government further on the issue of farmers’ protest, Gandhi said, “If the farmers are sitting on the Delhi border in huge numbers, should not the prime minister of this country and the government of the country respect them? Are they not even worth meeting? There was a severe winter, electricity was cut, yet the farmers continued to sit. Still the PM didn’t think of going and meeting them. Rahul Gandhi had raised the issue of the death of farmers in Parliament, but everyone remained silent on the death of all farmers. No one from the ruling party stood up in Parliament. Instead the farmers were insulted as they were called Andolanjivi and Parvjeei.”
Significantly, the assembly elections are going to be held in UP early next year. Farmers across the country have been protesting against the farm laws of the central government for more than three months. In view of this, the politics in the state is at its peak, particularly in various areas of western Uttar Pradesh. Many parties including Congress, SP, RLD and BJP are busy preparing their ground for the 2022 state assembly elections.
