Congress questions Masarat Alam's release, asks PM Modi to clear his stand
Alam is known to be the man who organised the anti-India protests of 2010 in the Valley that saw the death of 112 people.

New Delhi: The Congress on Sunday strongly condemned release of hardline Kashmiri separatist leader Masarat Alam and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clear his stand on this issue.

Congress leader Manish Tewari tweeted, "BJP- PDP govt Releases Masrat Alam in Srinagar, BJP protests in Jammu, evades in Delhi Ques Mr PM who is he political prisoner or terrorist?"

Alam is known to be the man who organised the anti-India protests of 2010 in the Valley that saw the death of 112 people. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders outrightly rejected this move and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) questioned Chief Minister's motives.

The RSS in its mouthpiece 'Organiser' said, "BJP must make it clear to the PDP leader to be clear if he is an Indian or not. He cannot adopt double standards."

Former Jammu and Kasmir chief minister Omar Abdullah also slammed the move on twitter and said, "Alam was the chief architect of the 2010 protests. It's not a coincidence that the protests died out AFTER his hard won detention. Either Alam has turned a new leaf & done a deal with Mufti Syed or he will go back to organising trouble in he valley."

The Chief Minister's daughter and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti however defended the move saying it was aimed at reconciliation.

Alam, who was detained under the public safety act for the past four and half years, said he will continue with his protest.

"I have come out of smaller jail to bigger one. Government did not release me but I have competed my sentence," he said.
