Congress likely to maintain its hold on Chandni Chowk seat in Delhi polls

New Delhi: In some good news for Congress, which has been on a downslide for the last few years, the party is likely to maintain its hold on the Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi Assembly elections. Former MLA Prahlad Singh Sawhney has been winning the seat and is expected to register another victory in the February 7 voting as well.

Like other constituencies, the poll bugle has not been sounded in Chandni Chowk but people are confident that Sawhney will win the seat again.

The main market of Chandni Chowk has a negligible local population as businessmen come from other parts of the city but Sawhney has huge support in the residential areas.

Backing Sawhney, businessman Surjeet Singh says, "Congress will win from here. People are voting for Prahlad Singh Sawhney. He has done a lot of work here."

The area has been dug up for the last six months and it has severely hampered the business. Many even complained that Sawhney has not visited the area once and has not taken up the matter.

"The digging work was supposed to be complete by October 2 which is now extended till March 1, 2015. Prahlad Singh Sawhney has never visited the area." says Rajesh Malhotra, President of Textile Market Association.

He is backing the Bharatiya Janata Party and says, "BJP will win 45 seats and will form the government. It should come to power in Delhi, only then co-ordination will be there between Centre and state. India needs chief ministers like Kiran Bedi."

People have also raised the issue of lack of parking facility, traffic jams, increasing number of cycle rickshaws among others.

The AAP has fielded Alka Lamba from the seat, but the fight is majorly between Congress and BJP. The AAP candidate, too, has some support in the area. "Prahlad Singh Sawhney is a very strong candidate. He is very accessible and always ready to help. But I will vote for Aam Aadmi Party as there's a need for change," says Farhan Atikh, a local.
