Congress Invites Kamal Haasan to Join Its Alliance with DMK, Says Ideologies Match
Haasan had expressed his desire to join hands with Congress for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, if it snaps ties with the DMK. But the Congress has been firm in its decision to continue its alliance with the DMK.

Chennai: The Congress has invited actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan to join its alliance with DMK in Tamil Nadu, saying the parties have similar ideologies.

Sanjay Dutt, Congress secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, said Haasan should contact the party leadership to finalise a tie-up.

Speaking to News18, he said, “As a soldier of the Congress, I would like to say both Rahul Gandhi and Stalin are rallying secular democratic forces. Kamal Haasan’s statements show that he has also taken a stand against fascist and communal forces. I feel that he should contact the leadership as now is the time for all the secular and democratic forces to come together.”

Hassan had expressed his desire to join hands with Congress for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls if it snaps ties with the DMK. But the Congress has been firm in its decision to continue its long-standing alliance with DMK. On Saturday, Haasan, speaking after his party Makkal Needhi Maiyam’s executive meeting, had said he is ready for an alliance with parties that do not damage the DNA of Tamil Nadu.

Dutt went on to list the similarities between the Congress and Haasan’s MNM. “Kamal Haasan’s statements show that he has taken a stand against fascist and communal forces. Both the Congress-DMK alliance and the MNM have zero tolerance against corruption, and are focused on overall development.”

On the controversy sparked by MK Stalin’s Rahul Gandhi for PM comment, the Congress leader said the DMK president only reflected the desire of the public. “Understanding the pulse of the people DMK president MK Stalin proposed Rahul Gandhi as prime ministerial candidate. And there is nothing to get disturbed about what he said. As the leader of his party he has the right to express his opinion. And we welcome his statement.”
