Bhopal: Congress on Wednesday expelled six party workers in Madhya Pradesh after they were found involved in manhandling AICC general secretary in charge Deepak Babaria in Rewa on Sunday.
Two others have been served show-cause notices over the incident and have been directed to respond within seven days, failing which disciplinary action is expected against them as well, the party said in a statement.
Babaria was asked a question about the possible chief ministerial candidate from Congress on Sunday and he had named Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia as the obvious choices for the role.
Soon after his statement, a group of party workers — who were reportedly supporters of a local Rewa MLA — asked Babaria why he chose to ignore Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh’s name. They soon turned violent and assaulted Babaria, who had to be rescued by local party leaders.
The party has, however, not yet decided on the action against Mauganj legislator Sukhendra Singh ‘Bana,’ who according to Congressmen in Rewa, was behind the assault on Babaria.
‘Bana’ is perceived to be a key aide of party chief Rahul Gandhi and is also rumoured to be close to Ajay Singh, who enjoys a sizable clout in Vindhya region where the incident took place.
Singh, however, distanced himself from the assault. The attack on Babaria had purportedly forced Gandhi to advance a meeting with MP leaders to July 31.
