New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday questioned former coal secretary HC Gupta for his role in the coal allocation scam. Gupta is currently being interrogated at the CBI headquarters in New Delhi.
Reports suggested that Gupta is being probed as to why coal blocks were allocated to ineligible companies.
HC Gupta was Chairman of Screening Committee and was Secretary Coal between 2006-09.
The CBI had on Tuesday recorded statements of two officials of the Prime Minister's Office as part of its probe into the coal scam. The CBI sought clarification from Vini Mahajan and Ashish Gupta regarding the allocation of the coal blocks, sources had said.
The CBI had filed its second affidavit on the coal scam in the Supreme Court earlier in May and had stated that Ashwani Kumar, who resigned from his post of the Law Minister after the affidavit came to light, Attorney General GE Vahanvati and officials from the PMO and the Coal Ministry had seen the probe agency's report and suggested changes to it.
The CBI also sought clarification on how the decisions were taken during the allocations of the blocks and on the role of the PMO after the Screening Committee's recommendations.
