New Delhi: Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram has crossed swords with Bharatiya Janata Party MP Subramanian Swamy over Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan. While extending his support to Rajan, Chidambaram also took on the BJP over the over the controversy surrounding the Ishrat Jahan encounter.
"The UPA government had appointed one of the finest economists and we have full faith in him (Rajan) even now," said Chidambaram even as Swamy continued his tirade against Rajan.
The BJP MP has been running a campaign against the RBI Governor and has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him not to give a second term to Rajan.
While BJP leaders accuse Congress of supporting Ishrat, Chidambaram mocked at the political rivals for creating a controversy. "Yes we had breakfast with Lashkar and then we invited them for dinner too," he said on the Ishrat encounter after launching a booklet which he claimed "highlighted" the failure of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government.
He said, "On May 26, the Modi government completed 2 years. We have printed and publish a booklet with all the facts and figures about this government. There is good reason why the mood of the people is somber and sullen. The reason is one word - economy. Where are the jobs? That's the most notable failure of the Modi government."
"They (BJP leaders) are celebrating two years of NDA government with a fact that its partner in government Shiv Sena is not joining the event," he added.
