Ahmedabad: Ruling BJP in Gujarat on Monday wrested five seats from Congress in the Assembly by-polls and yielded one to Congress which retained another seat.
Of the seven seats where polling was held on September 10, six were held by Congress while one was with BJP.
The BJP wrested Jasdan, Chotila, Dehgam, Danta and Sami-Hariz which were held by Congress earlier.
BJP, which earlier held Kodinar in the last Assembly elections, lost it this time in the by-polls to Congress. The Opposition also retained Dhoraji seat taking its tally to two.
The by-elections results will serve to be a great relief for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, after the unimpressive performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections and defeat to Congress in Junagadh Municipal Corporation body elections.
The by-polls were considered to be a test of popularity of the Chief Minister where he chose to abstain from campaigning.
"The results of the bye-elections show that BJP still remains a preferred choice of the people of Gujarat," said BJP General Secretary Jayantibhai Barot.
