Bhubaneshwar: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Kandhamal Lok Sabha constituency Ashok Sahu, who is wanted for inciting communal hatred and has been booked for an inflammatory speech is still absconding.
According to some reports, Sahu was detained and then let off after being detained by the Orissa Police on Sunday night.
But the Superintendent of Police of Nayagarh Jay Narayan Pankaj told CNN-IBN that Sahu is absconding.
"Ashok Sahu is still absconding. A team of Kandhamal district police and Nayagarh district police are searching for him. There are reports that he is hiding in Nayagarh district," said Pankaj
Sahu had been on the run after orders were issued to arrest him.
The Election Commission had issued a notice to Sahu on Sunday for violating the Model Code of Conduct during electioneering at Raikia on April 5. The Commission has also asked the District Magistrate to book Sahu under two more sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The sections are 505 IPC for making statements conducing public mischief and 295 IPC for deliberately acting to offend the religious feelings of a group of people. he has already been booked under 153 IPC for provocation with the intent to cause rioting and 125 of Representation of the People Act and promoting enmity among people in connection with the election.
He has been asked to reply to the EC notice by 1500 hrs IST on Wednesday.
Sahu, who is a retired Indian Police Service officer, could face a jail term for upto three years under the charges levelled against him.
