Jammu: Senior Congress leader and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's resignation from the state Assembly was accepted on Saturday.
Azad resigned from the membership of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Thursday after his election to the Rajya Sabha.
Azad had submitted his resignation to pro-tem speaker Choudhary Mohammad Aslam.
Secretary of the Assembly Mohammed Ramzan told reporters that Aslam had accepted Azad's resignation.
Azad, who had won the elections to the Assembly from Bhaderwah constituency in Doda district for a second term late last year was elected to Rajya Sabha unopposed on February 6.
Azad and Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz, both from the Congress, were declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on Friday after the scrutiny of nomination papers.
National Conference President Farooq Abdullah and senior party leader Mohammed Shafi Uri were also elected in the biennial Rajya Sabha polls on February 13.
Four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir had fallen vacant in November last year. But elections could not be held as the state Assembly, which forms the electoral college for the upper hours of the Indian Parliament, was dissolved.
