New Delhi: Here are the important news stories in election-bound India on Wednesday.
Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh is courting controversy. CNN-IBN has access to a confidential report sent to the Chief Election Commissioner by the District Collector of Mainpuri. The report makes it clear that Mulayam threatened the returning officer as well as senior police officials. The Election Commission will meet on Thursday to discuss the report.
The Uttar Pradesh administration has refused BJP prime ministerial candidate L K Advani permission to organise a rally in Azamgarh, citing security reasons. Aazamgarh is a Muslim-dominated area and the Uttar Pradesh administration says that Advani's trip there could develop into a security hazard. However, the District Magistrate of Azamgarh denied this.
Actor Sanjay Dutt may have already hit the campaign trail but the Central Bureau of Investigation is likely to oppose his petition to contest elections. It is likely to file an affidavit by March 30 on the same. On March 6, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation on Sanjay Dutt's petition. Dutt wanted his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts suspended, so that he can contest the Lok Sabha polls.
Reports suggest that Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss might be on his way out from the UPA. A final decision on this may well be taken on Thursday.
