New Delhi: Sikh groups plan to hold a protest outside the Supreme Court on Thursday against the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 anti-sikh riots case. Five others were convicted in the same case and the Karkardooma court is expected to hear arguments on the quantum of punishment later on Thursday.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press for a Supreme Court-monitored SIT probe into the case. "We want that a Special Investigation Team be formed and it should probe the cases under the supervision of the Supreme Court. There are so many cases on which no action has been taken like the Nangloi case which has been pending for 25 years," he told reporters after meeting the Prime Minister.
Over 200 Sikhs on Monday staged a protest near Parliament blocking traffic for about an hour against the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 riots case and demanding capital punishment for him.
Holding placards and shouting slogans against Congress, the protesters, including women, squatted at Vijay Chowk which is just a few metres away from Parliament House where a large number of police personnel were deployed.
