Riding on arguably one of the greatest ever knocks in the 48-year-old history of the ODI World Cup after the double century from Glenn Maxwell, Australia forced their way into the semifinals of World Cup 2023.

Becoming the third team after India and South Africa to reach the semifinals, fans will be licking their lips with the prospect of the South Africa vs Australia semifinal, while it remains to be seen which team India will face.

The final remaining semifinal spot is up for grabs and three teams – New Zealand, Pakistan and Afghanistan are in the running for the last remaining knockout berth.

Before the final round of group games, New Zealand are in fourth place having the best Net Run Rate (NRR) among the three sides still in contention for knockouts. Australia:

Australia have already reached the semifinals.

New Zealand:

New Zealand will face Sri Lanka in their final group game, which is a must-win clash after the Kiwis have lost four games in a row. Kane Williamson’s men will meet India in the semifinals if they beat Sri Lanka, and if Pakistan and Afghanistan fail to win their respective games. The Blackcaps also have the best NRR, so they have an added advantage, a big win for them over Sri Lanka on November 9 could complicate matters for the remaining two sides.

Pakistan:

From almost being eliminated from the World Cup, to fighting for the semifinals, Babar Azam’s men will hope that New Zealand and Afghanistan drop points in their final group games. A win for the Kiwis over Sri Lanka would mean that Pakistan will not only have to beat England on November 11, but they will have to do so big a big margin so as to pip the Black Caps on NRR.

Afghanistan:

Afghanistan have the toughest job at hand to reach the semifinals, they will face South Africa in their final group game. The underdogs have the worst NRR among all three chasing teams, so a win over the Proteas would not be enough to guarantee them a place in the semifinals. Only if New Zealand and Pakistan lose their respective final group games, then Afghanistan will go through, if the Kiwis and Pakistan win their matches, then the Afghans will have to beat South Africa on November 10 and do so by a big enough margin to pip the two other teams on NRR.
