India gave Sri Lanka a daunting total of 358 to chase as the two Asian giants locked horns at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer all missed well-deserved centuries, but their heroics propelled India to a massive total of 357/9 in the World Cup 2023 clash. Dilshan Madushanka picked up a fifer as Ravindra Jadeja put the finishing touches on the total, with his quickfire 35-run knock.
Earlier, Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis won the toss and elected to bowl first, drawing a massive cheer from the fans in Mumbai. Captain Rohit Sharma opened the Indian innings in characteristic fashion by smashing a boundary but was dismissed on the next ball as Madushanka drew first blood.
The pitch offered plenty of help to the seamers early on as Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill were both tested by Sri Lankan bowlers. Both of them were dropped earlier in their innings, but the slack fielding effort from Mendis and Co. ended up hurting them dearly.

KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer’s fifty partnership steadied the ship after the quick dismissals of Kohli and Gill before Rahul was dismissed by Dushmantha Chameera.
Iyer smashed a quickfire second fifty in the World Cup 2023, although Suryakumar Yadav had a forgetful outing in his return to his home turf, as he was dismissed on 12.

All eyes were on Kohli who had the chance to equal Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 49 tons, in front of the legendary opener himself, but while Virat failed to draw level with the Little Master, Mohammed Shami had a chance of going past Zaheer Khan’s tally of 44 wickets to become India’s leading wicket-taker in World Cups.
